The Onyx
The name Onyx comes from the Greek "Onux", which means "nail" or "claw". Black Onyx is made of silicon, it forms at temperatures below -200°C, by silica deposits laid down when siliceous waters flow into breccias. It can be black but also composed of circular and concentric bands of black, white or both.
During the Middle Ages in Europe, the stone quickly acquired a bad reputation. At that time, colors were heavy with symbolism. Black represented darkness, death, and discord. Owning an onyx brought bad luck and could attract evil forces.
But this symbolism of black can have a completely different meaning depending on beliefs. In India, for example, Onyx was used to protect against the evil eye and reduce pain during childbirth by placing a stone on the mother's stomach. In Persian times, this stone also guaranteed protection for the wearer.
It was finally at the end of the 19th century in England that the stone became popular again. Mourning fashion, largely influenced by Queen Victoria, became such that black took over, and other colors were banned.

Only your doctor has the skills required to diagnose a possible pathology and make the appropriate prescription. This information relates to the traditional properties of stones in lithotherapy as indicated by numerous reference works.
